The Big Society: How the Future Was Presented to Us - Exploring the Power of Visual Narratives
The Big Society explored how visual images created over sixty years ago continued to shape perceptions. Set in a small town in the far eastern reaches of Germany (formerly part of the DDR), the project reflected on how these visuals retained their impact—challenging past and present understandings of the world.
While rooted in this historical context, the themes it addressed were particularly relevant to the U.K. landscape at the time. This was during a period when the then U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, was attempting to introduce the concept of the 'Big Society' into British politics — a vision aimed at empowering communities and promoting social responsibility.
The project also examined how these historical visuals influenced cultural identity, social change, and public perception, shedding light on the lasting power of imagery in shaping our collective mindset.
